This realistic fiction book takes place in the 1880s, following a family of settlers who are traveling to the Nebraska Territory from Illinois. The family travels about 12 miles a day in their wagon, spending day and night together on their bittersweet journey. When they finally arrive they begin to build their new house, a "soddie" on their new land. They feel lonely but the father reassures them that more settlers will be there soon enough. They visit their closest neighbors to get supplies to build their new house, they plant seeds, and dig a well. Soon they run low on supplies and they must run to the nearest town to stock up. There the daughter Zoe finds dandelions growing and brings some home to give to her mother. Zoe and her sister plant them on the roof so their soddie house can be seen from a distance.
